Manuka – an alternative land use?
Barry Poole, acting as Plantation Consultant for Comvita will present us with his experience to date on the domestication of manuka, establishing manuka as a plantation species, completed and current research on increasing the antimicrobial properties of planted manuka, and issues specific to establishing manuka in Nelson/Marlborough.
Barry has over 30 years of plantation management experience with many species. For the last five years he has been working with Comvita to strengthen their supply chain by growing manuka plantations for high UMF honey production. This plantation programme includes establishing manuka forests throughout NZ and enhancing the genetic planting stock to yield higher UMF honey.
Following Barry’s talk we will have a short field trip to Upper Moutere to see how this has been put into practice. We will visit a manuka plantation established in 2015 and 2016 on a forest cutover site. This site will demonstrate how well manuka can compete with gorse and broom, and what growth is possible without any assistance.
