NZIF Scholarships and Awards

NZIF Awards 2010

Applications for the awards closed on 31 March 2010 and the following awards were made available by the NZIF Council in 2010.

Kirk Horn Award:

The Kirk Horn Award is an award for eminence.

The Kirk Horn Award is offered every second year and will next be available in 2012.

The purpose of the Award is to recognise outstanding contributions in the field of forestry in New Zealand with those eligible being members currently working in, or who have worked in, forestry in New Zealand.

No applications are called for, with the recipient being selected by a committee made up of either the President of the Institute, the President of the Royal Society and Professor of the School of Forestry, or, made up in total or in part of winners of the Award, at the discretion of Council.

NZIF Forester of the Year:

Criteria: This award was open to any nominated NZIF member who had achieved at least Full Member status. Consideration was given to the nominee's contribution to New Zealand's economic, social and environmental development, the use of innovation and new technologies or the creation of a new product or business of significance to forestry.

Procedure: Written application by nominator.

NZIF Chavasse Travel Award:

Criteria: This award was open to any NZIF member who had achieved at least Full Member status, interested in traveling overseas or bringing overseas speakers to New Zealand.

Procedure: Written application for up to $3,500.

NZIF John Balneaves Travel Award:

Criteria: This award was open to any NZIF member active in plantation research, with 10 years of professional activity ahead of them.

Procedure: Written application for up to $5,000.

This award was not offered in 2010

NZIF Undergraduate Award:

Criteria: This award was open to any NZ University Undergraduate Student Member of NZIF.

Procedure: Undergraduate application for $1,000.

NZIF Frank Hutchinson Student Award:

Criteria: This award was open to any NZ University Postgraduate Student Member of NZIF.

Procedure. Postgraduate application for $1,000.

NZIF Mary Sutherland Student Award:

Criteria: This award was open to any NZ Polytechnic Student Member of NZIF.

Procedure: Forest student application for $1,000.
